Bruxism is a condition in which you grind, gnash or clench your teeth. Many of us do it without even realizing. If you have bruxism, you may unconsciously clench your teeth when you're awake or clench or grind them during sleep.
Teeth grinding effects can range from mild to serious problems that may include: teeth mobility, fracturing of teeth, fracturing of dental prosthesis, including crowns and fillings, implant screw loosening and fractures, wearing of enamel, gum recession, aching in jaws and headaches, developing jaw joint disorders.
The most common and effective remedy for clenching and grinding during sleep is a custom mouth guard. Occlusal Guards are removable devices that fit over the teeth and are used to help prevent the wearing down of teeth during sleep due to nighttime grinding and clenching. A mold is made of the patient's mouth, either all the teeth on both the top and bottom or just one or the other. This mold is then sent to a lab that will make the guards to custom fit the teeth. The second visit is for the dentist to check the fitting of the guard.
Mouth Guards
In addition, custom mouth guards can be made for protection during sports.
A variety of occlusal and custom mouth guards can be fabricated to address specific conditions based on findings and presenting symptoms. A mouthguard is tailor-made to you. It provides a protective cover which fits exactly over your teeth and gums to cushion and protect your teeth, gums, and jaw from damage.
Why Would I Need A Mouthguard?
It is advisable to wear a professionally-made mouthguard if you play sports such as rugby, cricket, hockey, and football. Impact to the face, either from a ball or another player, can cause shockwaves to travel through your jaw, leading to bone damage; a direct hit can shatter or chip a tooth.
